Pretty Woman

The ultimate makeover and shopping spree montage is in the 1990 film Pretty Woman.  It may not have been the first rags to riches (or prostitute to lady) makeover in movie history, but it's the one that made movie goers wanting more.  Take a moment to enjoy the scene below.

BEFORE: Prostitute
How lucky Vivian was to snag Richard Gere that night!  Her usual customers were strip club owners and drug dealers.  Vivian was not a high class escort.  But that's ok!  Richard Gere didn't care.  He didn't even want sex!  Just directions to the Regent Beverly Wilshire and someone to have an indoor picnic with while watching I Love Lucy.  Aww.  So sweet.  They fell in love so, of course, Richard Gere paid Vivian to move in with him.

Now that she was getting paid to sit in a penthouse all day, while Richard Gere went off to work with George Costanza, she was going to need some new fashions.  That cute little cut out mini dress and thigh high patent boots just wouldn't cut it anymore.  Richard Gere couldn't take a hooker to a polo match!  But he could pay one to pretend she's not a hooker.  Anyway, he would set all that straight by spending an "obscene amount of money" to fix all that was wrong with her.

AFTER: Classy Woman Lady

The makeover scene was the major turning point.  Now Richard Gere could flaunt Vivian as his classy woman-lady in public. Now she could tell off those stuck up saleswomen who (ahem, correctly) thought that she could not afford their clothes.  They were kind of rude about it, but come on, they do work on commission.

However, behind every makeover scene there is a dark truth.  Even though the saleswomen no longer knew she was a hooker, Vivian knew.  Deep down inside she knew she was still a forgotten and unloved lady of the night.  So here is a depressing thought: not all makeovers change lives.  You can't scrub away the dirt that festers in your sinful soul.  But you can try with all the shopping sprees your Forever John can buy!  And that's the fun part!
