COSHOCTON -- Bill Oswald was happy when he left the grocery store with a full cart Tuesday morning, especially because he had only $65 left for the month before he entered Buehler's.
The 78-year-old Coshocton resident was the winnerof a supermarket sweep, which gave him 90 seconds to grab as many groceries as he could. The event was sponsored by Pepsi Cola Bottling Co., of Zanesville, which paid for more than $500 grocery bill.
"I've never won anything before, probably because I don't usually enter," Oswald said.
He registered for the sweep at Buehler's, and Ben Sigler, perishable manager at the store, pulled Oswald's name as the winning entry.
Because Oswald is a senior citizen, Pepsi allowed a Buehler's employee to do the running for him, and Robin Gosser mentally checked off the location of the items Oswald said he wanted. Gosser took careful aim at the laundry detergent aisle before the 9 a.m. countdown started.
Employees able to leave their stations stood by and cheered for Gosser as she grabbed several jugs of detergent, then went for the coffee aisle where she loaded tubs of decaffeinated coffee. Then Gosser hit the meat aisle. She tossed packages of hot dogs, chicken, hams, bacon, hamburger and steaks into the cart.
"Thanks Pepsi, for making me a winner," Oswald said as he posed for a photo with Ray Paynter, the Pepsi representative, and Denise Nine, Buehler's manager.
Paynter said Pepsi has conducted similar sweeps throughout its service area as a way to give back to the community.
"We chose Buehler's as one of our best customers and made one of their customers very happy," Paynter said.
Oswald said the extra groceries mean a lot because he is a senior citizen living on fixed income.
His friend, Joanne Starcher, hugged the store officials and Paynter and smiled as she said, "I got to have a free coffee, too."
